Merge color stops

How to merge colors and remove a color change

To remove one color change, merge the stop into the stop above it. On the workbench below, press Join above on that stop: both now sew as one stop in the thread above, and the color change between them is gone.

To merge every stop of a thread at once, set the colors and press Join same threads.

When to merge by hand

When a design uses two shades you sew with one spool, or a digitizer split one color into two stops. Join above merges them even if their colors differ; the joined stop takes the thread of the stop above.

Worked example

The sample flower on this page has 8 stops in three threads: green (stem and two leaves), pink (three petals) and gold (bee and center). Stops 4 and 5 are the left leaf and the right petal. Join above on stop 5 makes one stop that sews both in green, and the file goes from 7 color changes to 6. That is how to fold a stray color into the one before it. To keep each color, use Join same threads instead: 7 changes become 2.

Questions

Does merging delete stitches?

No. Only the color change between the two stops is removed; every stitch stays.

Can I merge stops that are not next to each other?

Move one next to the other first with Move up or Move down, then Join above. A move is refused where stitches overlap.

How do I go back?

Undo all returns to the order in your file.
