DST file editor
Edit your DST file online, free.
Drop your DST file on the workbench below. You can set each stop's thread color, join stops that use the same thread, move a stop up or down, and download the edited DST. Nothing to install, and it works on any computer with a browser.
It edits the color order, not the stitches: every stitch stays where it was.

What you can change
The stop order, which stops sew as one, and the color changes between them. You can also pick how many needles your machine has and print a run sheet that says which spool goes on which needle.
What it does not change: stitch positions, size, density or lettering. For those you still need a digitizing program.
Worked example
The sample flower on this page has 8 stops in three threads: green (stem and two leaves), pink (three petals) and gold (bee and center). Opened as it came, it sews in 8 stops with 7 color changes. Press Join same threads and it becomes 3 stops with 2 color changes: all the green, then all the pink, then the gold. Same 754 stitches, five fewer thread changes.
Questions
Is it really free?
Yes. The workbench is free to use on as many files as you like.
Which formats does it open?
Tajima DST only for now. If your design is in PES or JEF, export a DST copy from the program or site you got it from.
Will my machine read the edited file?
It is written as a standard DST with the same stitches, so a machine that reads DST should read it. Sew a test piece before a big run.
Can I undo?
Press Undo all to go back to the order in your file. Your original file is never changed; you download a new one.
